Grid Forty Five aims to challenge the way people see architecture by highlighting design features through a unique photographic process.

Much like other elements of design, such as typography and use of colour, buildings communicate with us, often through small but well considered features, such as a smoothly curved doorway, a stain-glassed window or floral stone carvings.

An architect would have made design decisions with the intention of communicating something about what the structure stands for. These details can often go unnoticed, as they are part of something much larger.

Using photographs, Grid Forty Five aims to eliminate the traditional view of the structure as a whole by making new abstract imagery through the use of grid systems and rotations.

Grid forty five is an ongoing photographic project by Gareth Strange and Sarah Burley, who run a small design studio in the Vale of Glamorgan called John & Jane. The concept was born in March 2017 from a single photograph taken at the Hadyn Ellis Building, Cardiff University. The duo were struck by the modern beauty of the building’s horizontal and vertical lines which created a juxtaposition of complexity and simplicity. Grid Forty Five is a great example of what happens when we just allow ourselves to get creative without any initial objectives, although they eventually work themselves out.
